Insurance
Students must always be insured for health and long-term care - either through their parents' family insurance or in the student health insurance scheme.
Health insurance for students is mandatory in Germany. Students at state or state-recognised universities must be insured in health and nursing care insurance. Up to your 25th birthday, you can be covered by family insurance free of charge through a legally insured parent, after that you must choose your own health insurance.
This also applies to international students. Students from countries with which the Federal Republic of Germany has a social security agreement are excluded. This applies to all countries of the European Union and the European Economic Area (EEA). The EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) or a corresponding substitute certificate from the statutory health insurance fund in your home country is sufficient proof. Sufficient proof of entitlement are the certificates GHIC (Great Britain), BH 6 (Bosnia and Herzegovina), D/RM 111 (Macedonia), DE/MNE 111 (Montenegro), DE 111 SRB (Serbia), A/TN 11 (Tunisia) and A/T 11 (Turkey).
Health Insurance for Students
When you enrol, you already have to prove that you are either insured in a public health insurance fund or that you are exempt from compulsory insurance. Student health insurance is generally valid until the student reaches the age of 30. The general contribution for student health insurance as well as the associated nursing care insurance contribution is set by the Federal Ministry of Health uniformly for all statutory health insurance funds at the same level. In the case of health insurance, an individual supplementary contribution rate is added.

Students are legally insured against accidents according to the German Social Security Code (SGB VII). The prerequisite is that you are enrolled at a state-recognised university, college or university of applied sciences or are a doctoral or diploma student. The insurance cover is non-contributory. The costs are borne by the German federal states.
Insurance coverage exists
- during attendance of lectures and seminars
- during other activities for which the university is responsible (participation in revision courses and excursions)
- during visits to university and state libraries
- during general university sports activities
- during activities in student self-administration
- during related trips
In addition, the journey towards enrolment is already insured.
Accidents that occur on the university campus or on the direct route between home and the university or during general university sports must be reported to the university, usually to the Student Secretariat or another responsible office at the university. Students should contact their responsible university. Heidelberg University students, for example, here.
Supplementary accident insurance exists for:
- Accidents during leisure time,
- Accidents during internships and exam preparation activities for studies outside the university,
- Accidents while working in a profession or trade - also as a student trainee - if this activity is part of the preparation for the examination,
- accidents during a semester abroad,
- deaths
